7. What do I do with my plates when I sell my vehicle?: Colorado plates remain with the customer, not the vehicle. If a vehicle is sold or traded, license plates should be removed and a pro-rated amount of the fees, based on the time remaining be credited toward your new vehicle registration or the renewal of another vehicle registered in the same name, provided the registration is not expired at the time the credit is applied for. Plates, proof of sale and registration should be brought into the office.
