Immigration Information

The Broomfield Police Department (BPD) is aware that recent national conversations about immigration enforcement have raised questions within some communities about the role of local law enforcement.

Information Regarding Federal Immigration Enforcement and the Role of the Broomfield Police Department

Local law enforcement agencies do not enforce federal civil immigration laws. As a result:

  • BPD officers do not enforce civil immigration laws. Immigration enforcement is the responsibility of federal agencies, not local police.
  • BPD officers do not assist federal immigration authorities with civil immigration enforcement actions.
  • BPD officers do not arrest or detain individuals based on their immigration status.
  • BPD officers do not ask people about their immigration status and/or to see their immigration papers.
  • BPD does not alert U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) about a person(s) that may have violated immigration laws.
  • BPD officers do not conceal their identity. Every officer wears a name tag and will provide their business card when requested.
  • BPD Patrol, Traffic and SWAT officers wear a uniform and/or have clear BPD markings visible (see photos below).

Community safety is a top priority for BPD and we are committed to ensuring Broomfield remains safe for all residents and visitors.

While Broomfield officers do not participate in federal immigration enforcement or assist ICE in civil immigration matters, officers also do not obstruct federal authorities from conducting immigration enforcement actions.

The primary responsibility of the Broomfield Police Department is to protect public safety and enforce Colorado law and the Broomfield Municipal Code. Officers will continue to respond to calls for service, investigate crimes and address unlawful activity within our community.

At this time, BPD is not aware of any planned immigration enforcement actions within Broomfield, nor have we observed such activity occurring locally.

Residents should feel comfortable contacting the Broomfield Police Department if they need assistance. If you experience an emergency or need police services, please call 911.
