Stormwater and Ponds

Stormwater is any precipitation (like rain, snow or hail) that falls from the sky. The water then streams along the surface of the ground. Impervious areas such as roads, roof tops, parking areas and sidewalks prevent infiltration of moisture from rain and snowfall, thus causing stormwater runoff. This runoff can be too much for the existing natural drainage systems to handle.

As a result, natural drainage systems are often altered to rapidly collect runoff and convey it away, using curb and gutter, enclosed storm sewers and lined channels. The stormwater runoff is then discharged, untreated, to downstream waters such as streams, reservoirs and ponds and can have many adverse effects on plants, fish, animals and people.

Stormwater vs. Sanitary System

Stormwater versus Sanitary System DrawingRain causes water to flow down streets, untreated, into nearby creeks, ponds, or lakes. Most outdoor items connect to the storm water systems.

Sanitary systems capture used water from homes and businesses. This water goes through the Wastewater Collection System. Sanitary systems connect to items like bathrooms, kitchens, and general faucets.

Stormwater Educational Information:

Leaves, yard debris and lawn fertilizer can impact waterways and result in harmful algae blooms in nearby water bodies. View the Nutrient Brochure to learn more.

Broomfield’s Tree Branch Recycling Facility is a great place to dispose of leaves, yard debris and more.

Household Hazardous Waste should never be disposed of down the storm drain or in an area that could lead to a storm drain. Please visit Household Hazardous and Electronic Waste Disposal for more information.

Stormwater Construction Information:

If you are searching for a Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE) Stormwater Construction Discharge Permit please visit the State of Colorado’s COR400000 Construction Stormwater Discharge Permits page.

If you need to submit a Stormwater Construction Discharge Permit and Stormwater Management Plan, please contact Leigha Gad at lgad@broomfield.org.

Illicit Discharge and Spill Response:

For illicit discharge and spill response, please call 303-464-5686 for an immediate report or fill out a Stormwater Inquiry or Concern form.

Call 9-1–1 for an emergency or after hours assistance or support.

Please report all issues on state highways (287, HWY 7 Baseline, 120th, and I-25) to the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) using the contact CDOT online form
