[ARCHIVED] Scam Alert: Fraudulent Texts Impersonate Motor Vehicle Departments

The Colorado Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV) is alerting Coloradans to a new wave of fraudulent messages being sent primarily by text message. Scammers are directly impersonating the DMV, including specifically saying they are the Broomfield Motor Vehicle Department, falsely claiming that recipients have unpaid tickets and threatening severe consequences such as prosecution, suspension of vehicle registration and revocation of driving privileges. These claims are entirely false, are designed to intimidate individuals into immediate compliance and are NOT from the Broomfield or Colorado DMV.

For more information on the wording of these messages, what to do if you receive a suspicious message or if you think you’ve fallen for the scam, visit the State of Colorado’s Fraud Alerts and Scams web page.
