Nesting Bald Eagles in Broomfield
In the early 1970's, there were fewer than 10 nesting pairs of Bald Eagles across the state of Colorado. Thanks to a ban on the pesticide DDT in 1972 by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, there are now nearly 200 Bald Eagle nests in Colorado. Although on the rise, Bald Eagle populations in Colorado are still low and need all the support they can get. To continue the legacy of this magnificent bird, we need to try to eliminate disturbance near the Broomfield Bald Eagles.
Since 2012, a pair of Bald Eagles have nested and raised their young in the large cottonwood on Broomfield conservation easement land that is privately owned, east of Del Corso Park. For the 2020 breeding season, the eagle pair built a new nest in a tree south of Stearns Lake on Boulder County Open Space.
Ways You Can Support Broomfield's Bald Eagles
- Keep your distance and dogs on leash - If the eagles change their behavior, you are too close. Do NOT cross the railroad tracks or trespass onto the conservation easement property. This property is privately owned and closed to the public. Keep dogs on leash at all times, especially at Del Corso Park.
- The use of drones is prohibited - Per Broomfield Municipal Code 12-28-280(G), the flying of drones or unmanned aerial vehicles on Broomfield's open lands is illegal, even if they are being operated from another location.
- Do not use poisons for rodent control - Eagles scavenge dead animals, even poisoned mice, and feed them to their young. These poisons can also endanger other wildlife, pets, and children. Please use non-toxic forms of control such as live or snap traps.
- Report harassment of Eagles - If you see anyone harassing an eagle or their nest by getting too close or flying a drone nearby, immediately report it to Broomfield Police Department at 303-438-6400, Broomfield Open Space and Trails at 303-464-5103 during regular business hours M-F, and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) at 1-844-FWS-TIPS (1-844-397-8477).

Bald Eagle Monitoring Efforts
