Police Standards

The Standards Unit is responsible for the administration of the internal affairs investigative process. This formalized process is fair and impartial, and maintains the integrity of the Broomfield Police Department. The Standards Unit also follows up on all complaints received from community members.

How to File a Compliment or a Complaint

If you would like to compliment an officer or employee for a job well done, make a complaint about an officer or employee, report an issue with the police department's website, or send any other comments to the BPD you may do so by completing the feedback form. If you feel your situation requires immediate attention, please call the non-emergency line at 303-438-6400 and ask to speak to the on-duty patrol commander.

When contacting the department for either a compliment or complaint, please be as specific as possible and provide the following information:

  • Name of the officer or employee
  • Date, location and time (if known)
  • Nature of the incident

A case report or summons number is helpful, although not required.  After you are contacted by the investigator, you will have the opportunity to include any supporting documentation you may have.

What to Expect when you File a Complaint

As stated in our Mission Statement, we are committed to personal and organizational integrity. The police department accepts responsibility, both as individuals and as members, for our actions. Your email will be acknowledged on the next business day. The investigator will also explain the investigative process and provide their contact information should you need to get in touch with them during the investigation.

When the Investigation is Concluded

You will receive a written notice from the investigator when the investigation is complete.

U Visa Certification Information

The Victims of Trafficking and Violence Protection Act (VTVPA) of 2000 created the U Visa (U non-immigrant classification) to provide legal status to victims of specified crimes who have suffered mental or physical abuse and are helpful in the investigation or prosecution of the criminal act. The U Visa provides eligible crime victims with non-immigrant status the ability to temporarily remain in the United States while assisting law enforcement.

Who is eligible for a U Visa?

The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) may find an applicant eligible for a U Visa if the applicant:

  • Is the direct or indirect victim of qualifying criminal activity;
  • Has suffered substantial physical or mental abuse as a result of having been a victim of criminal activity;
  • Has been helpful, is helpful, or is likely to be helpful to a federal, state, or local prosecutor, to a federal or state judge, to USCIS, or to other federal, state, or local authorities investigating or prosecuting criminal activity; and
  • The criminal activity violated the laws of the United States or occurred in the U.S. or the territories and possessions of the United States.

Additional information can be found through the USCIS

The Broomfield Police Department recognizes the importance of U Visas to crime victims and is committed to reviewing and responding to certification requests in a timely manner. If you are an individual with non-immigrant status and a victim of a qualifying criminal activity that is investigated by the Broomfield Police Department, you or your representative can email the I-918 Supplement B form to bpd@broomfield.org or mail the form to the Broomfield Victim Services Unit, 7 DesCombes Drive Broomfield, CO 80020.
