Food Inspections
Environmental health specialists are responsible for licensing and inspecting all public food facilities such as restaurants, supermarkets, and other retail operations. In addition, environmental health specialists conduct investigations of food and institution-based illness, complaints and vector control issues. Report health concerns, including foodborne illness concerns, to 720.887.2220.
Risk-Based Inspection Frequency
An inspection of a retail food establishment should be performed at least twice every year unless the department follows the risk-based method. Broomfield follows the risk-based method, therefore some restaurants are inspected once every other year. Learn more about the risk-based methodology and about food safety at the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment Food Safety web page.
Colorado Retail Food Establishment Rules and Regulations
Broomfield follows the Colorado Retail Food Establishment Rules and Regulations. Broomfield’s Environmental Health Specialists perform inspections, respond to complaints and do plan reviews of new or changes of ownership on over 325 Retail food establishments (RFE) within the City and County of Broomfield.
The RFE inspection evaluates over 56 violations that make up the inspection report. The violations are separated into: Priority, Priority Foundation and Core violations. A Priority violation is more likely to contribute to food contamination, illness or an environmental health hazard. A Priority Foundation and or Core is a violation that usually relates to general sanitation, operational controls, operating procedures, facilities or structures, equipment design or general maintenance.
In general inspections are a snapshot of the conditions on the day of the inspection. It is best to review inspection reports over time to get a more accurate picture of how well a RFE is in compliance.
RFE inspection reports are public record. For inspections after January 1, 2020 please visit My Health Department's website.
For inspections prior to January 1, 2019, please reach out to Broomfield Public Health and Environment at publichealth@broomfield.org with your specific request. If you have questions regarding Broomfield's food inspection program, please call 720.887.2220.
