New Permits
DO I HAVE TO MAKE AN APPOINTMENT FOR A NEW APPLICATION?
Yes. Please call 303-464-5799 to schedule an appointment.
HOW LONG DOES THE PROCESS TAKE ONCE A CONCEALED HANDGUN PERMIT IS SUBMITTED?
The process is completed within 90 days after the date the required items are received.
I'VE ALREADY HAD MY FINGERPRINTS DONE FOR CBI (TEACHER, REAL ESTATE AGENT, ETC). DO I HAVE TO HAVE THEM TAKEN AGAIN?
Yes. CBI requires that a new set of fingerprints be done for all new CHP applications.
HOW WILL I RECEIVE MY PERMIT?
If you have a photo on file we will mail your permit to the address listed on your application. A photo will be taken when you initially apply for your permit.
Renewals
HOW DO I RENEW MY CONCEALED HANDGUN PERMIT?
It is the applicant's responsibility to submit for renewal of a permit before the expiration date on the permit card.
HOW SOON PRIOR TO THE EXPIRATION DATE CAN I RENEW?
Four months (120 days) prior to expiration date.
CAN I RENEW MY CONCEALED HANDGUN PERMIT IF I MOVE TO ANOTHER COUNTY?
Yes, at the time to renew your permit, you will renew with the county in which you now reside, own property, or own a business.
HOW LONG DO I HAVE TO WAIT TO RECEIVE MY RENEWED PERMIT?
The process is completed within 90 days after the date the required items are received.
DO I NEED TO TAKE ANOTHER FIREARMS TRAINING CLASS EACH TIME I RENEW?
No. Only new applicants need to provide proof of firearms training.
General Questions
HOW LONG IS MY PERMIT VALID?
Your permit is good for five (5) years.
WILL YOU NOTIFY ME WHEN IT IS TIME TO RENEW MY PERMIT?
No. We do not notify you of impending expiration.
MY PERMIT EXPIRED MORE THAN SIX MONTHS AGO, CAN I STILL RENEW IT?
No. You only have up to 6 months past the expiration to renew it, after that it is permanently expired. You must then start the “new” process.
WHAT DO I NEED IF I CHANGED MY NAME?
Contact the concealed handgun unit as soon as a name change has occurred so a new set of fingerprints can be taken to update your record.
IF I MOVE TO BROOMFIELD COUNTY, HOW DO I RENEW MY CONCEALED HANDGUN PERMIT FROM ANOTHER COUNTY?
Applicants may submit a permit renewal to the Broomfield Police Department within 120-days before the permit expires.
WHAT HAPPENS TO MY BROOMFIELD CONCEALED HANDGUN PERMIT IF I MOVE WITHIN COLORADO?
You must notify the Broomfield Police Department within 30 days of an address change. If you move within the state of Colorado, the permit remains valid.
WHAT HAPPENS IF I MOVE OUT-OF-STATE?
If you move out of state, the permit becomes invalid and must be returned to the Broomfield Police Department.
IF I MOVE TO COLORADO, IS MY OUT-OF-STATE CONCEALED HANDGUN PERMIT VALID?
Once you become a legal resident of Colorado, you have a 90-day grace period with your out-of-state permit as long as Colorado has reciprocity with that state. You can go to the Colorado Bureau of Investigation Reciprocity site to find this information.
IF I JUST MOVED HERE FROM OUT OF STATE, CAN I APPLY FOR A PERMIT RIGHT AWAY?
No. You will need to be a Colorado resident by having a Colorado driver’s license.
IF I OWN PROPERTY IN COLORADO AND ANOTHER STATE, WHERE DO I APPLY FOR A CONCEALED HANDGUN PERMIT?
You must apply in the state where you claim primary residency (i.e. have a driver’s license.)
IF MY PERMIT IS FADED TO THE POINT I CANNOT READ IT. WHAT DO I DO?
You can fill out a lost/destroyed form and purchase another permit for a $15.00 fee.
MY PERMIT WAS LOST/STOLEN. WHAT DO I DO?
Fill out the lost/stolen form. Must show proof of identification.
DO OTHER STATES HONOR COLORADO'S CONCEALED HANDGUN PERMIT AND RECIPROCITY?
Permits are valid throughout the state of Colorado. Other states do have reciprocity with Colorado, and you may go to the Colorado Bureau of Investigation Reciprocity site to find this information.
CAN I GET A CONCEALED HANDGUN PERMIT IF I HAVE A MEDICAL MARIJUANA PERMIT, CARD OR CERTIFICATE?
No. Per C.R.S. 18-12-203 (c)
IF I OBTAIN A CONCEALED HANDGUN PERMIT, WILL THE BROOMFIELD POLICE DEPARTMENT RELEASE MY INFORMATION TO THE PUBLIC?
No. Per C.R. S. 18-12-206 (3) (a)
WHAT ARE THE CONCEALED HANDGUN CARRY RESTRICTIONS?
A person may not carry a concealed handgun into: A place where firearms are prohibited by Federal law; a public building in which security personnel and electronic weapons screening devices are permanently in place; or where a private property owner, private tenant, private employer or private business entity disallows the practice.
DOES MY OUT OF STATE PERMIT SUFFICE FOR FIREARMS TRAINING?
No. We need to see your original firearms training certificate that was issued within the last 10 years by a "certified instructor."
DO YOU ACCEPT A HUNTER SAFETY CARD FOR FIREARMS TRAINING?
NO. Applicants must provide a training certificate from a handgun training class. (defined in C.R.S. 18-12-202.5)
